Kaveh Afrasiabi: US continues hostile attitude towards Iran irrespective of nuclear deal

A view of the US Congress in Washington, DC (AFP)

Press TV has interviewed Kaveh Afrasiabi, an author and political scientist in Boston, about warnings by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution against enemies’ agenda to wage a “soft war” on Iran.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: When it comes to the soft war, the US has been exercising that not only throughout the years but they actually allocate budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars to do that. Can you give us some examples of how the US does that?

Afrasiabi: The US as a superpower that is keen on maintaining its global hegemony has devoted considerable sum of resources to its colossal propaganda machine aimed at what it considers as hostile or unfriendly regimes or systems or governments and we saw that very recently earlier this month, a popularly elected president in Brazil was replaced through a very illegitimate process because Brazil is part of the BRICS nations and the US wants it back in its orbit and there are so many examples of subversion of hostile democracies around the world by the US through its combination of soft and hard power. We saw that in Haiti, throughout Latin America, Egypt, and the list goes on, Ukraine and so forth.

So Iran has to be very vigilant about preventing the US from replicating its successful attempts at political change and transformation and weakening the political system in Iran through its very sinister and nefarious moves of soft and hard power.

Press TV: One of the things that Iran’s Leader has said in this speech that he gave is that he issued a warning of a dangerous plot as he said by arrogant powers to influence decision making bodies in the country. So is he talking about for example something in some way similar to what happened in Brazil where you have different organizations that have been infiltrated by this “soft power”?

Afrasiabi: Unfortunately it is not limited to Brazil. We also see that in Venezuela and a whole number of other countries where the US has basically sophisticated its pattern of influence by not limiting itself to trying to reach out to the military sectors and cause military coup but also use parliamentary venues for regime change to overthrow unfriendly regimes and replace them with pro-US client states.

And so these are very alarming examples that Iranians particularly those that are in decision making power have to be very vigilant because the US considers Iran as hostile, and Iran has been subjected to the systematic assault by this abusive superpower that irrespective of the nuclear deal continues to have hostile attitude towards Iran.
