World's largest optical telescope to be built in Chile

A digital rendering shows what the European Extremely Large Telescope will look like.

A ground-based telescope that will dwarf those in current use is on track to begin observations in 2024 after the signing of a key contract, the European Southern Observatory said Wednesday.

The research organisation says it has picked a contractor to build the dome and main facility of the telescope. The European Extremely Large Telescope already will cost 1.1 billion euros to build and start working.

Its main mirror with 39-meters in diameter is capable of providing images which are around 15 times sharper than those of the Hubble space telescope. The giant instrument will be situated on a remote mountain top in Chile’s Atacama Desert, which is famous for its clear skies.

Such facilities help astronomers answer questions such as how the first galaxies were formed, or how fast the universe is expanding.
