Press TV has interviewed Sara Flounders, with the International Action Center from New York, about Amnesty International’s call on the European Union to impose sanctions on transfer of arms to Egypt over its crackdown on protesters and political opposition.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: What more can you tell us about the story? What is the significance? The European countries, which claim to be advocates of human rights; yet we have this report by Amnesty International that says countries such as the UK, Germany and Italy have been involved in fueling killings and torture among other abuses in Egypt. What does it mean for them?

Flounders: Each of these countries is following the lead of the US. And none of the coup itself in Egypt would not have been possible without US military aid, diplomatic support, economic assistance, US coordination with Saudi Arabia and with the NATO military alliance, which the EU, the European countries, are very much part of a NATO military alliance.

So, all of this is coordinated by the US for a complete destruction of democracy in Egypt, because that was a risk to the US, it was a risk to the European countries, it was a risk to their continued efforts to totally dominate the region and to stop any progressive change from breaking through.

And this is why they support the coup in Egypt and President Sisi, General Sisi. The military coup is a complete destruction of democracy in Egypt. It is really has meant thousands of deaths, tens of thousands imprisoned, no right to a trial, freedom of press, anything like that.

And of course the very countries, so to speak again and again, in the name of human rights and democracy such as the US, such as the European countries, are the very countries who are the pirates looting the countries of the world and always trying to cover themselves with talks of democracy.

It’s a total fraud, but really we have to blame the US and the European countries for the horrendous conditions in Egypt today, because General Sisi could not have prevailed without this military aid and without the political and diplomatic support.
