Outrage over LSE's appointment of Angelina Jolie
Public outrage has been provoked by news that Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie Pitt will take up a teaching post at the London School of Economics.
The LSE has said that the TV star and activist will join as a visiting professor on a new masters course that will be run by its Center for Women, Peace and Security, launched by Jolie and Lord William Hague in 2015.
The pair co-founded a global scheme to eradicate sexual violence in conflict zones following a film Jolie directed depicting the Bosnian war.
Her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, was related to the 1992-95 Bosnian war in which about 20,000 women were reported to have been raped.
"It is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women's rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict," Jolie, a special envoy for the UN refugee agency, said.
"I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students, as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the UN."
However, the decision to hire Jolie has been criticized as “a mockery to those who value education.”
Miles Goslett, writing for Louise Mensch’s new venture, Heat Street, said it “sounds like a total swizz and a desperate marketing ploy.”
He said that Jolie once tried to become a funeral director, but “she didn’t finish the course.”
Some other critics linked her appointment to the awarding of honorary degrees, a practice that has become increasingly discredited.
