Metro system in Santiago to run on solar power

The world's first metro to run on solar energy power in the Chilean capital city, Santiago.

The metro system in the Chilean capital is on track to become the world’s first to run mostly on solar power.

The metro of Santiago, which serves over two million passengers a day, will be 60% wind and solar powered from 2018.

Chile has emerged as one of the world’s solar development hotspots, with about 1.1 gigawatt installed by the end of April and some of the sector’s lowest power prices globally.

Officials say the plan would cut Chile’s carbon emissions by 130000 tonnes per year. The country’s president says renewable energy could account for 25% of installed capacity as soon as 2018.
