Arms for Libya: preparation for war?
The Austrian capital Vienna hosted a key meeting on the situation in Libya. Participants were the top diplomats from the US, Europe and the Middle East together with representatives from key players in Libya. The meeting was believed to have been meant to prepare the ground for a western war in Libya; all these in light of an already familiar cause - fighting terrorism. The meeting ended with an agreement to provide heavy arms and equipment to the UN-backed unity government in Libya.
France brokers Israel-Palestinian talks
France is going to host a so-called peace talks meeting between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in Paris on June 3. This is the latest in a large number of futile attempts by Western governments to bring the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli regime to the negotiating table. The US which has acted as mediator in the past has agreed to the Paris talks.
US efforts to broker a deal between the two sides collapsed in April 2014. Amid the Western efforts to revive the talks, a development in the Israeli politics has threatened to throw a wrench in the works. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked hawkish politician Avigdor Lieberman to become Israel’s minister for military affairs
Syria War
Fighting continues between terrorist groups and government forces backed by Hezbollah fighters in parts of Syria. The clashes rage on despite the cessation of hostilities brokered by the US and Russia. Moscow and Damascus have blamed the violations of the truce on the terrorists and the al-Qaeda franchise al-Nusra Front and Daesh. Amid the seemingly unending conflict, Russia has offered the US to send its warplanes on joint missions with Russian jets to bomb the terrorists. Washington has rejected the proposal.
