Formula 1's youngest race winner Max Verstappen has set the fastest time in testing at Barcelona’s Catalunya Circuit.

The 18-year-old Belgian posted the time of 1 minute 23.268 seconds on soft tyres to take top spot on Wednesday. Verstappen was already using the much-anticipated engine upgrade that Red Bull hopes will see the team become more competitive with Mercedes and Ferrari.

McLaren’s test driver Shtoffel Vandorn ended his day in second place with Mercedes test driver Pascal Weer-line back in third.

"I think it is positive, today was about checking the numbers and the reliability and it was all good. We didn't have any problems and could run the whole day," Verstappen told Sky Sports about the new engine.

Asked if he would like the upgraded power unit for Monaco he responded: "Of course, you always want more power."
