Sevilla have been crowned as Europa League champions after impressively defeating Liverpool 3-1 at Basel’s St. Jakob-Park stadium.

The Spanish club entered the Wednesday final with the aim of becoming the first team to win the competition for 3 consecutive years while the Merseyside Reds were after their first success in the competition since 2001.

Their manager Jurgen Klopp had selected the same team which defeated Villarreal in convincing fashion at Anfield in their semi-final second leg.

On the other side, Unai Emery made only a slight change to his squad which tasted victory in their semi-final second leg against Shakhtar, with Sergio Escudero replacing the injured Benoit Tremou-linas.

35 minutes into the match and the Reds took the lead through Daniel Sturridge, who unleashed a powerful strike into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for his side.

But, the holders stormed back after the restart and tied the match at 1 a-piece. Kevin Gameiro turned a perfect ball to his side’s first with a tap-in from close range.

Coke then turned the match on its head and managed to put the holders in the lead in the 64th minute by poking a delightful finish past the keeper to make it 2-1 to the Spaniards.

Six minutes later, Sevilla doubled their advantage through Coke again who powered a strike beyond the helpless keeper as the La Liga side made history by becoming the first team to ever win the Europa League for a third back to back year.
