Trump willing to speak to Kim Jong-Un over nukes
Presumptive US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has expressed willingness to talk with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un in an effort to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program.
“I would speak to him, I would have no problem speaking to him,” Trump said in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday. “At the same time, I would put a lot of pressure on China because economically we have tremendous power over China.”
The billionaire businessman declined to provide further details on whether there would be bilateral talks between the US and North Korea or a face-to-face meeting.
There has been little dialogue between the US and North Korea since Pyongyang refused participation in disarmament negotiations with the US and other nations in the year 2008.
North Korea, which is under UN sanctions over its nuclear tests and missiles launches, accuses the US of plotting with regional allies to topple its government, and says it will not relinquish its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy towards Pyongyang and dissolves the US-led UN command in South Korea.
Tensions have escalated further recently over joint military exercises by Washington and Seoul. The US has a permanent force of around 28,500 troops in South Korea.
