I will remember London mayor’s ‘nasty’ remarks: Trump
Tell London’s Muslim Mayor Sadiq Khan that I will remember his “very rude” and “nasty” statements, says Donald Trump, the US Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee.
In an interview broadcast on Monday, Trump said that he is apathetic about how Khan views his presidential campaign.
“When he won, I wished him well,” Trump said of Khan, who scored a resounding victory over his billionaire Conservative rival earlier this month. "Now I don’t care about him.”
“Let’s see if he’s a good man,” said the billionaire, whose campaign has been marked by controversial statements, including with disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants and Muslims. "It doesn’t make any difference to me how he does.”
Trump also said that he's offended by Khan’s “very rude” and “nasty” remarks. “I will remember those statements.” He also asked Khan to “take an IQ test”.
Last week, Khan rejected Trump’s offer that he could be an exception to his proposed ban on all Muslims entering the United States.
“Donald Trump’s ignorant view of Islam could make both our countries less safe – it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around the world and plays into the hands of the extremists,” said Khan, the son of a Pakistani bus driver.
Khan rejected the notion that Islam was incompatible with modern Western values and said Trump’s “ignorant” views on Islam were “playing into the hands of extremists.”
Since May 6, when Khan defeated his billionaire rival, Zac Goldsmith, he has repeatedly criticized Trump’s “ignorant” views on Islam, arguing that he does not deserve to win the White House.
“I’m hoping that he’s not the guy who wins,” the Labour Party member said on May 11. "My message to Donald Trump and his team is that your views of Islam are ignorant.”
In December, Trump called for a “total and complete” ban on Muslims entering the United States after a deadly mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, which was inspired by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.
The proposal triggered widespread criticism and condemnation in the US and around the world.
