San Francisco hotels build beehives for honey, awareness

Top hotels in the US city of San Francisco have introduced a new method to increase the bee population. They have set up hives on their rooftops, creating a bee highway in the sky.

Organizers say the hotel rooftops are a suitable place to put the hives; far away from guests and pedestrians below. The hotels are using the thousands of pounds of honey they're collecting to create honey-inspired cuisine in their restaurants.

"This is not about making money, it's really about raising awareness about sustainability," said Melissa Farrar, spokeswoman at the Fairmont in San Francisco. "There's not one solution so we wanted to do our part to help. It's part of the bigger effort for helping the planet."

The bees produced more than 70 pounds of honey last year and are on track to do more this year. The colony is expected to grow to 800 thousand by next year.
