The world No.2 Roger Federer who’s been struggling with knee and back injuries, has been knocked out of the Italian Open after losing to fast-rising Austrian Dominic Thiem, in the 3rd round of the tournament.

The Swiss maestro who withdrew from last week’s Madrid Open, was a fraction of his usual best against the 15th-ranked Dominic Thiem on Thursday.

He went up a break early into the match, but the Austrian broke right-back and took the 1st set in a tie-break.

Thiem went on to break Federer’s serve midway through the 2nd, before wrapping up the match 7-6, 6-4, to earn his 32nd victory of the season.

The 17-Time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer now faces a fitness race and has only 10 days to prepare for the French Open.
