Italian Open: Raonic through to 2nd round

Milos Raonic is through to a second-round meeting with Nick Kyrgios

Milos Raonic and Nick Kyrgios set up a mouthwatering second-round clash at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome after wins on Monday.

The 10th-seeded Raonic was made to work hard by Italian wildcard Marco Cecchinato at the ATP 1000 Masters event on Monday. The Canadian saved 9 break points before posting a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory in 2 hours and 9 minutes. Raonic had also defeated Cecchinato at the Monte-Carlo Masters in Monaco last month. He will face Australian Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Keryos booked his place in the second round in Rome after cruising past Salvatore Karuzo of Italy.

The 21-year-old dominated the first meeting between the two from the outset and relied on his powerful forehand strokes to dispatch the local wildcard in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The Australian hit 10 aces and needed only 61 minutes to wrap up the victory. He will next face tenth-seed Milosh Raonic who saw off Marco Cecchinato for a place in the second round.

Kyrgios continued his impressive form this season with a comfortable first-round win

Frenchman Richard Gasquet also posted a 1st-round victory over his compatriot Julien Benneteau. Gasquet proved too strong for his rival in the all-French clash and wrapped up a 6-3, 6-love victory in 74 minutes. Gasquet will next face Andreas Seppi who defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the opening round.

Elsewhere, home favorite Fabio Fognini suffered an early exit following a 6-1, 7-6 defeat at the hands of Geeyermo Garcia-Lopez.

13th seed Dominic Tiem of Austria also defeated Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to go through to the second round.
