Yemen peace talks hit roadblock

The Yemen peace talks are in deadlock again. The United Nations envoy for Yemen says negotiations between the country’s warring sides have hit a new impasse after the delegation of the former Yemeni regime suspended its participation in discussions aimed at ending fighting in the impoverished Arab country.

Once Ansarullah fighters had major gains, like the capture of an army base, the opposing side pulled out of the talks. But the talks have resumed, even though the ceasefire keeps getting violated.

Syria war

The ceasefire in Syria that was put into place in February is under severe threat as attacks by the warring parties continue. And the northern city of Aleppo is in the spotlight where over a week of heavy fighting has already left hundreds killed.

This comes despite calls by the United States and Russia for a halt in fighting, which they say is necessary to salvage the already struggling peace talks in Geneva. A main obstacle appears to be the failure by the United States to designate powerful groups like Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham as terrorists. Both groups are considered to be affiliated with al-Qaeda and are generally blamed for a major role in the current crisis in Syria.

Anti-Israel sentiments in UK

British politics is plagued by a rise in anti-Israeli sentiments. And the Labour Party has been specifically put in serious distress over this. Following the anti-Zionist remarks by the former mayor of London and Labour member, Ken Livingston last week, another party member is now the target of anger.

Nottingham City councilor Ilyas Aziz has now been suspended from the party pending an investigation after he called for the relocation of Israel to the United States. Pressures are now mounting on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn over accusations that the party has increasingly become anti-Semitic.

But Corbyn has rejected the allegations, stressing that the Labour Party is absolutely against any form of racism. He has also rejected calls to denounce contacts with Hamas and Hezbollah, by emphasizing that he stands determined to continue to engage anti-Israeli resistance groups.
