Iran, South Korea sign cooperation agreements

  • Iran and South Korea have signed nineteen agreements to boost bilateral ties in various sectors including oil and gas. The agreements were signed in a meeting attended by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and South Korea's President Park Geun-hye who arrived in Tehran earlier today for a landmark three-day visit.
  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari says Tehran is ready to mediate a prompt resolution to the political turmoil in Iraq. He noted that all sides in Iraq should focus their efforts on fighting corruption and terrorism.
  • Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff says she will fight to the end against an impeachment move that could mark her last week in office. She described the impeachment as a coup not only against democracy but also against the achievement of workers.
  • A new survey suggests that 58 percent of Britons support the recent all-out strike by junior doctors across England. The two-day strike came after years of talks on a controversial new contract broke down. The government announced in February that it would impose the contract on doctors in August.
  • The United Nations says 15 refugees have gone missing since their boat sank in the Mediterranean on Friday. The accident happened 4 hours after the boat left Libya for Italy. Only a day earlier 84 asylum seekers went missing in a similar incident off the coast of Libya.
  • Russian defense ministry says talks are underway to halt the fighting between Syrian government forces and foreign-backed militants in Aleppo. It says the negotiations are aimed at including the flashpoint province in a temporary lull in fighting around Damascus and Latakia.
  • A Labor Day rally in the US city of Los Angeles has turned into a protest against Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump. The protesters condemned Trump’s stance and his discriminatory remarks against immigrants. The Republican front-runner has promised to expel undocumented immigrants from the United States.
  • A major sandstorm and strong winds have caused travel chaos and air pollution in northwestern China. The sandstorm reduced visibility to less than 200 meters in urban areas and affected local traffic. It has also caused flight cancellations and delays.
