At least three people have lost their lives and 15 others have sustained injuries in the collapse of a six-storey residential building in Kenya's capital Nairobi due to heavy rain and flooding.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene of the collapse in the capital’s densely-populated Huruma district on Friday night to take out scores of trapped survivors.

"Our teams are on the site, where it is complete chaos," Kenya Red Cross spokeswoman Arnolda Shiundu said, adding that the people rescued from the rubble had been taken to hospital.

According to Shiundu, 150 households were affected by the incident, which came following the heaviest rains since the start of the April-May rainy season in the African country.

Japheth Koome, Nairobi's police chief, said that heavy traffic delayed rescue teams trying to reach the scene.
