Panama Papers: No leaks on US

About 115 million records kept by Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca were leaked to the press

There is no doubt about the size of Panama Papers leaks. It is the biggest in history and much more than that of Wikileaks or The Swiss Leaks with 2.6 terabytes of data in all.

According to the ICIJ, the international consortium of journalists, the files reveal the offshore holdings of 140 politicians and public officials from around the world. Current and former world leaders in the data include the prime minister of Iceland, the president of Ukraine, and the king of Saudi Arabia. More than 214,000 offshore entities appear in the leak, connected to people in more than 200 countries and territories.

Major banks have driven the creation of hard-to-trace companies in offshore havens.

But what the leaks don’t expose is the role of the US. For example, this investigation was funded by the US government. And many of US’s traditional foes like Russia and China were highlighted in this leak.

Additionally, the US is one of the major destinations for offshore accounts, especially when it comes to getting the companies incorporated, in places like New York, Delaware and Nevada.
