Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says relations with Latin American countries are among the Islamic Republic’s principled policies, stressing that no obstacle can hinder the expansion of mutual ties.

“Tehran and Montevideo are firmly determined to broadly expand already cordial and friendly ties and no third country can undermine these relations,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Uruguay’s Vice President Raul Sendic Rodriguez in Tehran on Tuesday.

He added that the establishment of Iran-Uruguay joint economic committee and the implementation of agreements reached between the two countries would open a new chapter in mutual relations in the interests of both nations.

The Iranian president also urged the two countries to make use of their great economic potential in a bid to boost cooperation.

In addition to economic and trade issues, there are also important issues in the world such as the environment and terrorism which require consultation and convergence, Rouhani said.

He stressed the importance of cooperation among all countries across the world to combat terrorism and the spread of extremist thoughts.

Uruguay’s vice president, for his part, said his country is determined to strengthen cooperation with Iran in all areas of common interest.

Rodriguez added that energy and agriculture would be among important sectors that the two countries are determined to increase cooperation.

He also called on Tehran and Montevideo to enhance coordination on regional and global issues.

Uruguay’s veep is in Tehran at the head of an economic and trade delegation on an official visit to hold talks with Iranian officials on ways to strengthen trade and economic cooperation.

On Monday, he sat down with Iranian First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. He also participated in joint talks between senior delegations of Iran and Uruguay, co-chaired by him and Jahangiri.
