Kerry says US not opposed to foreign banks business with Tehran

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • US Secretary of State John Kerry says Washington is not opposed to foreign banks doing business with Tehran. He said if banks have questions about the remaining anti-Iran sanctions, they should ask. Kerry made the remarks at a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
  • A record 175 countries have signed the Paris climate deal during a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York. China and the United States, which are the world's top polluters, are among the signatories. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also signed the deal on behalf of the Islamic Republic.
  • At least 12 Palestinians have been injured during clashes with Israeli forces in towns of Eizariya and Abu Dis in East Jerusalem al-Quds amid heightened security measures for the Jewish holiday of Passover. At least 20 Palestinians were also detained in Friday’s predawn raids by Israelis in al-Quds.
  • Syria’s UN Ambassador Bashar al-Ja'afari says Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia have been sponsoring terrorism in his country amid the silence of the international community. Ja’afari said these countries, backed by Europe and the United States, have imposed an unjustified embargo on Syrian banks and are preventing all foreign investment in the country.
  • Eight people, including two children, have been killed in a mass shooting in the US state of Ohio. Police say the shootings occurred at four different locations. The victims all appear to be part of the same family. Seven of those killed appeared to have been shot execution style.
  • US President Barack Obama says he supports Britain to remain in the European Union. He added that EU membership enhances the special relationship between London and Washington. Obama said Britain leaving the EU would make it more difficult to clinch a trade deal between the US and the UK.
  • At least three soldiers have been killed in a bomb blast in the Turkish province of Tunceli. No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion so far. Turkey's largely Kurdish southeast has been the scene of clashes between government forces and militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the PKK.
  • A Bomb explosion in the Iraqi capital has claimed at least 9 lives. The blast targeted a Shia mosque in the southeast of Baghdad. More than thirty people were injured. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast however officials suspect that the attack was carried out by the Daesh Takfiri group.
