Iran taekwondo fighters shine in Asia championships

Iranian men's national taekwondo team has impressed the spectators at the 22nd edition of Asian Taekwondo Championships in the Philippines, and been crowned as the champion of the continental sporting event.

On Wednesday, the Islamic Republic of Iran stood on top of the podium with a total of 5 (three gold and two silver) medals, having racked up 56 points.

South Korea finished in the second place with four medals (three golds and one bronze) and 45 points.

Uzbekistan snatched three medals (one gold, one silver and one bronze), having collected 28 points to occupy the third spot.

China landed in the fourth slot, having earned one gold and three bronze medals besides 28 points.

On the last day of the Asia taekwondo championships in the Philippine capital city of Manila, Iran’s Saeed Rajabi bagged a gold medal in the minus 80-kilogram weight class  after defeating Taiwanese rival Liu Wei-ting 4-3 in the final contest.

In the minus 68-kilogram category, Alireza Aliyari claimed a silver medal after losing the last competition to an athlete from South Korea.

On Tuesday, Armin Hadipour and Mirhashem Hosseini were crowned as the champions of Asia’s minus 54-kilogram and minus 58-kilogram weight divisions.

Abolfazl Yaqoubi finished as the vice champion in the minus 63-kilogram weight class.

Iran’s women team also bagged three bronze medals at the Asian Championships. Mahsa Jeddi was third-placed in the minus 57-kilogram, while Nahid Kiani and Melika Mirhosseini won bronze medals in the minus 46-kilogram and over 83-kilogram sections respectively.

The 22nd edition of Asian Taekwondo Championships started at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City, Manila, the Philippines, on April 18 and came to an end on April 20.

A total of 239 athletes from 31 Asian countries competed in the tournament.
