World No.3 Roger Federer has managed to book his place in the last-8 of the Monte Carlo Masters, after beating Spain’s Roberto Bautista in straight sets.

The Swiss maestro was playing in his 1st tournament since his Australian Open knee injury.

Federer began the match with confidence against his Spanish opponent as he took the 1st set 6-2. The Spaniard couldn’t give the Swiss No.1 much trouble, as Federer avoided an upset, taking the set 6-4, and the victory in 1 hour and 9 minutes.

Federer now meets Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals in his quest for a 1st Monte Carlo title after having reached the final 4 times.

Meanwhile, king of clay Rafael Nadal has also reached the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters after overcoming the in-form Dominic Thiem.

The 5th seeded Spaniard came into the match, looking for revenge, as he had suffered a defeat on clay to Thiem earlier this year.

The tight contest was full of powerful hitting from the back of the court from both men. However, it was Nadal who took command after a fiercely fought first set to claim a 7-6, 6-3 victory.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner now faces 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
