European Parliament: EU helped create refugee crisis

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Yemen’s Ansarullah movement’s Spokesman Muhammad Abdussalam has warned that the Saudi-backed former regime is not genuinely pursuing peace. Abdussalam said that despite an ongoing truce, the Saudi-backed forces are still advancing in Sana’a and Ma’rib provinces.
     
  • In Bahrain, police clash with protesters who had taken to the streets in the village of Karzakan to show solidarity with political prisoners. Regime’s armored vehicles tried to disperse the protesters who in turn set one of the vehicles on fire. Bahrain has been the scene of anti-government protests since 2011.
     
  • Iraqi Lawmakers have scuffled and hurled water bottles at each other during an emergency session at the parliament. The incident happened after a vote on the new cabinet was postponed. The lawmakers from different blocs are locked in a dispute over who should hold key cabinet posts.
     
  • India has imposed curfew in parts of Kashmir that it has under control. The move is aimed at preventing protests against the killing of three civilians by the Indian army. People in the region are outraged over the alleged molestation of a girl by soldiers.
     
  • Members of the European Parliament say EU’s asylum system has broken down and is incapable of helping desperate refugees. During a debate in the parliament, some legislators argued that the EU foreign policy has helped destabilize nations and create the refugee crisis.
     
  • Russia is pushing for UN measures to monitor extremist groups in Syria, arguing they may launch chemical attacks in Europe. A draft Security Council resolution, presented by Russia, asks all countries, particularly those neighboring Syria, to report any attempt by the terrorists to acquire or produce chemical agents.
     
  • The US says a Russian jet has flown very close to an American warship in the Baltic Sea, calling the move unsafe and unprofessional. The White House has criticized Russia’s overflights as entirely inconsistent with the professional norms of militaries operating in proximity to each other.
     
  • People in the US city of Chicago have taken to the streets to demand justice for Pierre Loury. The 16-year-old African-American was shot dead by a police officer under conflicting circumstances. The protesters held a vigil at the scene of the shooting.
