1 dead, 1 injured in shooting near US university

A Lexington police car escorts an ambulance on the corner of Woodland Avenue and Columbia after reports of shots fired on Saturday.

A shooting near a US university campus has left 1 person dead and another injured, causing the campus to go on alert.

The incident happened in the 500 block of Woodland Avenue in Lexington near the University of Kentucky on Saturday, Lexington police said.

Both victims were taken to a hospital where one of them, James Nathaniel Gordon, 28, died from a gunshot wound, but the other person, whose name was not disclosed, remained hospitalized with a shoulder injury.

The two were standing outside an apartment building when a gunman approached them and opened fire, shooting at both, police Lt. Jonathan Bastian said.

According to detectives, the shooting “was not a random act” and that there is “a relationship between certain involved parties.”

Police did not provide further information, but warned that the gunman is at large.

“I’ve lived in Lexington all my life and have never felt really scared, but now I’m going to definitely be more cautious,” said public health sophomore Megan McCarthy, who lives in the vicinity of the campus. “You never think about that happening here.”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put the total number of domestic gun deaths at 1.5 million between 1968 and 2014.

According to the CDC, firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
