Republican senators introduce new anti-Iran bill

Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Marco Rubio (R-FL)

Two US GOP senators have introduced a bill to block Iran’s use of US dollars for trade transactions.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Illinois Senator Mark Kirk, who oppose the Iran’s nuclear deal, reacted Wednesday to a proposal by the Obama administration to ease use of the US currency for Tehran.

According to the bill, a copy of which was obtained by the Associated Press, the US Treasury Department will not permit anyone "to conduct an offshore United States dollar clearing system for transactions involving the government of Iran or an Iranian person" or "provide United States dollars for any offshore United States dollar clearing system conducted or overseen by a foreign government or a foreign financial institution for transactions involving the government of Iran or an Iranian person."

This is while the Obama administration has previously said that it will not grant Iran direct access to its financial system.

"The administration has not been and is not planning to grant Iran access to the US financial system," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said on Monday.

US officials, however, have given tacit green light for the “indirect use of dollars for transactions with Iran as long as they did not involve US or Iranian banks,” according to the AP.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France as well as Germany clinched a nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 following two and a half years of intensive talks.
