Iran names squad for Asian Para-Taekwondo Championships

The head coach of the national Iranian men’s para-taekwondo team has announced the squad which is scheduled to attend the second edition of Asian Para-Taekwondo Championships in the Philippines later this month.

On Monday, Hossein Modanlou unveiled the names of the selected athletes, with Sajjad Javanbakht representing the Islamic Republic of Iran in the minus 61-kilogram weight section.

While Mehdi Pourrahnama will be Iran’s competitor in the minus 75-kilogram category, Asghar Azizi and Mohsen Abdi will take part in the over 75-kilogram contests.

Saeed Sadeqianpour, Mahmoud Ja’farzadeh and Ahmad Narimani will also be in action in the minus 61-kilogram, minus 75-kilogram and over 75-kilogram weight divisions respectively .

 The second edition of Asian Para-Taekwondo Championships will be held in Manila, the Philippines, on April 18, 2016.

Taekwondo was introduced as a full member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in 2015.

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), which is the international federation governing the sport of taekwondo, started developing the kyorugi (sparring) discipline for para-athletes in 2005.

The WTF has been working on the development of poomsae (martial art forms) as a competition format for athletes of all impairments since 2013.

At its meeting in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, on January 31, the IPC Governing Board announced that the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will feature 22 sports, with taekwondo and badminton included for the first time.

The 22 sports that will be included in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games are athletics, archery, badminton, boccia, canoe, cycling, equestrian, football five-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.
