US Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders says he has never compared Republican candidate Donald Trump with Adolf Hitler, but he will do everything to stop Trump's hatemongering.

“No, I did not compare Trump to Hitler, but I will do everything that I can to stop this type of hatred and hate talk that we are hearing,” Sanders told ABC News on Sunday.

Trump, who has never held elected office, is leading the Republican race despite the fact that his campaign has been marked by controversial statements, including disparaging remarks about women, Mexican immigrants and Muslims.

Sanders whose campaign was boosted by landslide wins in Alaska, Washington and Hawaii, believes his recent string of victories shows he can not only win the Democratic nomination, but also triumph in the general presidential election against the Republican nominee.

According to a CNN/ORC survey last month, Sanders has a 20-point lead over Trump in a head-to-head contest. Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton held a 12-point lead over Trump in the same survey.

Sanders told ABC News that he thinks he is the strongest candidate to defeat Trump, adding Clinton is getting "very nervous."

"The last CNN poll had us up by 20 points. Here in Wisconsin, I was 19 points ahead of Trump, also a significant margin better than she is," he said.
