Americans’ views of Donald Trump at new lows: Poll
Donald Trump continues to have the most negative image of any of the five remaining US presidential candidates, according to a new poll.
Trump and his main rival for the Republican nomination, Senator Ted Cruz, suffered significant drops in their images over the past two months, Gallup has found.
Only 30 percent of Americans view Trump in a positive light, while 65 percent have an unfavorable image of the Republican frontrunner.
Cruz’s popularity dropped as much as Trump’s, although he remains the better-liked of the two candidates.
The ultraconservative Texas senator is seen favorably by 32 percent of Americans, while 48 percent of the public hold a negative image of him.
The two presidential contenders have recently engaged in character attacks against each other, including an intensifying war of words over their wives.
Last week, Trump threatened to “spill the beans” on Cruz’s wife, Heidi, following the publication of a decade-old nude photo of his own wife, Melania, when she was a model, which the billionaire businessman attributed to the Cruz campaign.
Meanwhile, John Kasich’s ratings have improved significantly, the Gallup survey showed. The Republican governor of Ohio now enjoys the most positive image of any of the five remaining candidates.
Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s popularity also slipped marginally in the past two months - 42 percent favorable and 53 percent unfavorable.
Bernie Sanders has also seen significant improvements in his favorability ratings. The Vermont senator has opened up a small lead over Clinton in Wisconsin, which holds its primary on April 5.
