The Syrian army presses on with an offensive to push Daesh out of yet another central town after seizing the ancient city of Palmyra.
The UK-based monitoring group known as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the government forces backed by Russian warplanes are advancing towards the Daesh-held town of Qaryatayn. According to the observatory, the Syrian army has already captured a series of strategic hilltops overlooking the town. Qaryatayn lies on a key road linking Palmyra to the Qalamun region in Damascus province. Daesh captured the town in August 2015. The terrorist group has kidnapped hundreds of people, including Christians, and destroyed a historic monastery in the town.
