Half of American voters support ban against Muslims: Poll
A majority of American voters agree with Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump that the United States should implement a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.
When asked if there should be “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,” 51 percent of Americans said they support the ban, according to the new poll by Morning Consult released on Tuesday.
The poll showed that 71 percent of Republican, 34 percent of Democratic voters, and 49 percent of independents support the ban.
Eighty-four percent of Trump's supporters endorse the ban, while 65 percent of those who back Ted Cruz are in favor of banning Muslims entering the US, according to the survey.
On the Democratic side, 37 percent of Hillary Clinton’s supporters and 27 percent of Bernie Sanders' fans agree with the travel ban.
Seventy percent of likely Republican voters agreed with Cruz’s recent call of stepping up monitoring of Muslim neighborhoods, compared with 35 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of independents, according to the poll.
In the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22, Cruz proposed more resources for US police to "patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized."
Next day, Cruz doubled down on his call for authorities to monitor American Muslims, despite criticism from top law enforcement officials.
The twin blasts at Brussels Airport and another at a metro station close to the European Union headquarters in the Belgian capital left at least 31 people dead and 250 others wounded.
The Daesh Takfiri group, which was created and funded by the US and its regional allies to destabilize the Middle East region, has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
In December last year, Trump created a furor in the US and around the world by proposing a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims” entering the United States, following a mass shooting in California.
The New York real-estate mogul also called for a database to track Muslims across the United States, and he has also said that the US would have "absolutely no choice" but to close down mosques.
