Nigerians rally to condemn detention of top cleric

  • Nigerians have rallied in several cities to condemn the detention of top Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Protest rallies were held in the cities of Lafia, Katsina, Gombe, and Kaduna. The demonstrators demand the immediate release of the cleric and hundreds of other Muslims detained by the army last December.
  • U-S presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has won the Democratic caucuses in Alaska. Sanders is also way ahead of his rival, Hilary Clinton, in the state of Washington, with over 80 percent of the votes counted there. Hawaii is the third state holding Democratic contest on Saturday.
  • Italian police say they have arrested an Algerian man suspected of providing false documents for the terrorists linked to the deadly attacks in Brussels and Paris. Jamal Eddine Ouali was detained under a European arrest warrant. Belgian police identified Ouali during a raid on his apartment last October.
  • Scottish protesters have held a pro-independence rally in the capital Glasgow, calling for a second referendum on the country’s exit from the U-K. They also called on British officials to stop campaigning against the cause of independence. Scotland held its 1st independence referendum in 2014. The "No" side won the vote.
  • The refugee deal between the European Union and Turkey has sparked anger on the Greek island of Lesbos. Protesters demanded that the controversial deportation of refugees be halted. Under the EU-Turkey deal, Greece will send back refugees deemed ineligible to Turkey.
  • Syrian troops, backed by airstrikes and artillery barrages, have advanced into the Daesh-controlled city of Palmyra from several directions. The fighting has been the heaviest in the weeks-long campaign to liberate the ancient city. The army has already captured the Palmyra citadel, seized by Daesh last May.
  • The Iraqi army, backed by Popular Mobilization Units and Kurdish fighters, is pushing to retake the Daesh-held city of Mosul for the third day. Iraqi forces have cleared the villages in the Makhmour area south of the city. Mosul fell to the hands of Daesh terrorists in 20-14.
