A tiny bird landed on US Democratic presidential Bernie Sanders’ podium as he was speaking at a rally on Friday night, earning a standing ovation from the crowd and getting social media all aflutter.

The bird was already attracting attention on Sanders’ stage at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, but when he referenced “this little bird,” the bird hopped onto his lectern.

The crowd roared and burst into thunderous applause. Sanders stood smiling and laughing at the little fellow for a few seconds as the crowd cheered.

“I think there may be some symbolism here,” Sanders told the crowd. “I know it doesn’t look like it, but that bird is really a dove asking us for world peace. No more wars.”

After this interesting incident, the hashtag #BirdieSanders began trending on Twitter as people shared memes and photos of the incident.

Sanders is a vocal critic of US military interventions overseas. He voted against the 2003 invasion of Iraq while his rival, Hillary Clinton, voted in favor the war.

The senator from Vermont has often pointed to contrast between himself and Clinton on the campaign trail. “She was wrong, I was right.”

Sanders calls himself a “Democratic socialist.”  He is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination.

He has previously noted that he’s the longest-serving independent member of Congress in US history. He was previously a member of the US House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007.
