US Republican hopefuls vow to dismantle Iran deal

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • US Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has pledged to dismantle the nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 if elected as the president. Another Republican Hopeful Ted Cruz also vowed to shred the nuclear deal which he described as disastrous.
  • US Democratic Presidential Hopeful Hillary Clinton has called for more sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile program. Addressing the pro-Israeli lobby group AIPAC in Washington, Clinton said Iran still poses a threat to Israel and needs to be closely watched.
  • Cuban President Raul Castro says there are profound differences between his country and the US which will not go away despite a thaw in relations. Castro has also slammed Washington’s embargo on Havana and called for the return of land used for the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay.
  • The Leader of Lebanon’s resistance movement Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah says Saudi Arabia threatens any state which does not meet its demands. He noted that Muslims and the Arab world still have respect for Hezbollah despite it being declared as terrorist organization by the Persian Gulf countries.
  • Reports say the next round of Yemen peace talks between warring sides could be held by the end of this month in Kuwait. Negotiations could be accompanied by a ceasefire. Previous UN-sponsored talks have failed to put an end to Saudi deadly aggression on Yemen.
  • A bomb attack targeting a military vehicle in the Turkish southeastern town of Nusaybin has left at least four soldiers dead. The area has been the scene of repeated clashes between Turkish troops and militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.
  • Greece has arrested hundreds of refugees a day after a deal between the European Union and Turkey over refugee crisis came into effect. Officials say the asylum seekers who arrived after the deal are being sent to detention centers on Lesbos and Chios islands.
  • The International Criminal Court has found former vice president of Democratic Republic of Congo guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Central African Republic. Jean-Pierre Bemba is accused of failing to stop his private army from killing and raping people in 2002 and 2003.
