Brazilian farmer Oscar Jose has dedicated his farm in Lagoa Funda to breeding giant rabbits ever since he retired from his job as an engineer. While Jose affirms that affection and care are needed, the animals’ diet is really the biggest secret when it comes to breeding super-sized Peter Cottontails.

According to the report from Ruptly, the rabbits’ fodder contains 17 percent proteins as well as a Chinese plant called “Ramie.” Not only do they get big, they can weigh up to 20 lbs, which is more than double the weight of normal (9lb) rabbits.

“People never believe in the weight of the animals,” he says. “So when they arrive here they feel very surprised and they always say the same: ‘Oh my god! I thought it was a lie. I really didn’t think they were this big.’ So it is always like that with this surprise feeling when they arrive to the farm.”

The rabbits can weigh up to 20 lbs, which is more than double the weight of normal (9lb) rabbits.

The 72-year-old farmer had a passion for breeding rabbits since he was a child. After quitting his former job he had the time to build up the farm and cages himself and started his hobby, which soon turned into business. At first, Jose raised normal bunnies but after one customer asked for a giant one, he researched until he found a farmer in Argentina and bought some animals to begin the offspring. The first giant rabbits were a success and now the big bunnies are the flagship of his farm.
