Pentagon disciplines officers for Afghan hospital attack

Over a dozen US military personnel have been punished over the deadly bombing of a medical facility in Afghanistan last year. The punishments, which have not been publicly announced, do not include criminal charges and are mainly administrative. The disciplined include both officers and enlisted personnel, but officials said none are generals. Medical charity Doctors Without Borders, which owned the hospital in Kunduz, refused to comment on disciplinary actions until the Pentagon makes a public announcement. The Pentagon has called the bombing a tragic, but avoidable accident caused primarily by human error. However, the charity group has called for an independent investigation into the airstrikes which killed 42 people. Civilian casualties have risen in Afghanistan since the US and its allies waged a war on the country in 2003.
