Clinton reportedly won primary elections in states of Florida, North Carolina & Ohio

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • U-S media projections show that Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has won primary elections in the states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. Republican Donald Trump has also beaten his rivals in Florida, Illinois and North Carolina. The primaries were held in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri and Illinois.
  • US Republican senator Marco Rubio has dropped out of the party’s presidential nomination race after losing in Florida. Addressing his supporters, he warned that the politics of resentment will leave the U-S a fractured nation. Rubio’s remarks indirectly targeted Trump who has drawn criticism over his stances.
  • British lawmakers have voted in favor of a controversial online spying bill despite criticism from privacy advocates. The Investigatory Powers Bill sailed through the House of Commons with 281 to 15 votes. The proposed law will give police and spies unprecedented powers to look into internet records of British citizens.
  • U-N High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi says he will ask the international community to receive 400-thousand Syrian asylum seekers at a meeting in Geneva on March 30. Earlier on Tuesday, E-U Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avra-mopoulos called for the immediate relocation of thousands of refugees among member states.
  • The UN secretary-general has called on Israel to halt its latest act of land grab in the occupied West Bank. Ban Ki-moon added that such actions show Israelis are trying to tighten their grip on the entire West bank. Ban’s remarks come after Tel Aviv announced the seizure of hundreds of hectares of land.
  • An Ecuadorian plane carrying army personnel has crashed in the Amazon rainforest in the country’s Pastaza province. The army says 22 people were on board the training flight at the time of the crash. Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa said in a tweet that all the passengers were killed.
  • A new study shows that a mother infected with Zika virus in her first three months of pregnancy faces one in 100 chance her child will suffer severe brain damage. The virus produces flu-like symptoms and is blamed for causing grave brain damage in newborns.
