Paris bookshop to print books on demand 'in minutes'

A printing robot named Expresso Book Machine is deployed to A bookshop in Paris that is capable of printing books on demand 'in minutes'

There are times when we just can’t get the book of our choice at the bookstore. But now things are becoming a lot easier with the help of this unique machine. A bookshop in Paris’ Latin quarter will offer the opportunity to have any book from its collection printed in just a matter of minutes.

A printing robot named Expresso Book Machine is deployed to the store located in Paris's Latin quarter and run by publishing company PUF (French University Press). Customers can browse a list of available books on a database and place their order, and their book will be printed before their eyes. The whole process takes just seven minutes. The only requirements are that the book contains fewer than 850 pages and in black and white - only the cover can be printed in color. The print-on-demand books cost the same price as copies from a traditional bookstore.

The technology is now available in Paris for the first time. Customers can browse a list of available books on a database and place their orders, and their book will be printed right before their eyes. The books cost the same price as copies from a traditional bookstore. And it's becoming popular among book lovers.

The technology is small enough to fit in a retail bookstore or a small library room. And it’s already being used in several universities as well as in some bookstores in the US. The digital option means that bookstores no longer need to order and stock up on books.
