New round of Syria peace talks gets underway in Geneva

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • UN envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura says proximity talks will be used to bridge differences between the Syrian government and the opposition in the talks that started in Geneva today. Earlier, Damascus rejected a demand by the Saudi-backed opposition to discuss a political transition without President Bashar al-Assad.
  • Saudi Arabia has confirmed that a UAE fighter jet has crashed in Yemen, killing 2 pilots. The United Arab Emirates has been actively assisting Saudi Arabia in its bloody aggression against neighboring Yemen since March 2015.
  • Iran has condemned a bomb attack in the Turkish capital Ankara that left 37 people dead and 125 others injured. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari says terrorist attacks across the region and the world signify the need to adopt a united stance in the fight against terrorism. 
  • The Iranian president says the Islamic Republic and Vietnam are set to forge closer cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Speaking during a press conference with his Vietnamese counterpart, Hassan Rouhani said both sides emphasized the need to help settle issues pertaining to conflict-stricken countries such as Syria and Yemen.
  • Israeli forces have shot dead three more Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Israeli media allege the victims conducted two separate car-ramming attacks in the city of al-Khalil. Over 200 Palestinians have been killed in a wave of renewed violence that has gripped the region since October last year. 
  • Peace activists rally in New York City to protest against US involvement in Syria war, as well as NATO's expansion in Europe. The demonstrators gathered near the UN headquarters and chanted anti-war slogans. They called for an end to the war in Syria and other Middle Eastern countries. 
  • US Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has threatened to set his supporters on Bernie Sanders’ campaign, accusing the Democratic hopeful of disrupting his rallies. This comes amid rising protests during Trump's events nationwide. Sanders has responded by calling Trump a liar.
  • A US serviceman has been detained for allegedly raping a woman in Japan’s southern Okinawa Island. The 24-year-old sailor is accused of committing the assault at a hotel in Naha region. Japanese officials say they’ve informed the US side about the issue.
