Houston officer fatally shoots unarmed man

Houston Police investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting at the intersection of Collingsworth Street and the Eastex Freeway, Saturday, March 12, in Houston.

An unarmed US man has been shot and killed by an officer in Houston, Texas, Houston Police Department says.

The department spokesman John Cannon said the shooting happened on Saturday after the man allegedly became agitated and charged the officer.

Officer K. Levi was driving northbound along the feeder road of the Eastex Freeway when he saw a man pulling on a traffic sign at the intersection of Collingsworth St, Cannon said.

Levi pulled over to stop the man who he said was agitated and yelling obscenities, Cannon said, adding the man appeared to be "under the influence of a strong narcotic."

Levi then tried to calm the man, who began charging at the officer. Levi used his Taser on the man, but it did not seem to have any “effect”.

The man charged the officer again which prompted Levi to use his gun, killing the man.

"That's when the officer pulls out his duty weapon, discharges it multiple times and strikes the suspect," Cannon said.

Police did not provide any information on the dead man and his identity, but according to his friends, he lived nearby.

One neighbor said that the man "was a cool person. He wasn't messy or into fights and stuff."

Police shootings in Houston have been in the spotlight recently with the Houston Chronicle reporting that more than 150 people were killed or wounded by Houston police officers from 2010 to 2015.
