US troops on foreign soil commit rape, murder, says China
China has strongly criticized the US human rights record, saying the Washington is notorious for crimes including "rape and murder" of civilians.
"The United States conducts large-scale extra-territorial eavesdropping, uses drones to attack other countries' innocent civilians, its troops on foreign soil commit rape and murder of local people,” Chinese diplomat Fu Cong told the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday.
He said that the US is “notorious for prison abuse at Guantanamo prison, its gun violence is rampant, racism is its deep-rooted malaise."
The Chinese diplomat also dismissed the US-led criticism of his country’s human rights record, including Beijing’s alleged detentions of lawyers and activists.
Fu’s remarks came in response to a joint statement by the US and 11 other countries criticizing China's human rights record.
"These actions are in contravention of China's own laws and international commitments," said US Ambassador Keith Harper, who read out the statement backed by Australia, Japan and nine northern European countries.
The issue of human rights has long been a source of tension between the world’s two largest economies.
China has long rejected criticism of its rights’ record, saying the country’s people “have the greatest authority to pass judgment” on the issue.
Beijing also argues that it is unfairly singled out for criticism of its rights record, stressing that other governments, including the US, should examine their own records before making accusations.
