London protest urges release of refugee women from detention
A protest rally outside the UK Home Office in the British capital has blasted the country’s detention of refugee women and demanded their immediate release.
The crowd of women protesters in London called on Home Secretary Theresa May to free the women of Yarl’s Wood- - the notorious detention center where female asylum seekers are held.
“Home Secretary, you are a woman too,” protesters chanted.
The demonstration was in solidarity with refugee women who come to the UK on the International Women's Day on March 8.
Those in attendance were upset by the treatment of women who had fled violence in their countries only to find a similar situation at Yarl’s Wood.
The notorious camp, which houses hundreds of women and is run by the private security firm, Serco, has been criticized for its treatment of the female detainees.
Yarl’s Wood, Britain’s largest of 14 detention facilities for women facing deportation, has been repeatedly subject to allegations of sexual abuse of detainees since it opened in November 2001.
In April 2014, Rashida Manjoo, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women, was reportedly prevented from investigating conditions inside Yarl’s Wood.
Over the past years, many protests have been held in the UK for the closure of the detention camp.
