In this edition of The Debate, Press TV has conducted an interview with Tony Gosling, an investigative journalist, from Bristol, and an adviser to the European Parliament, Gary Cartwright, from Brussels, to discuss a deal under negotiation between Turkey and the EU on the refugee crisis.

Gosling believes that by suppressing the opposition newspapers, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has practically suspended Turkey’s constitution and has turned the country into a full-fledged dictatorship Gosling says without having free media in Turkey there is no guarantee for the deal with Europe to succeed.

“I think it would be the best act for any kind of honorable European Union to cancel those talks and demanded that Turkey and Erdogan take seriously the idea of having free press, otherwise there was going to be no deal,” Gosling said.

On the other hand, Cartwright thinks that the European Union has completely failed in solving the current refugee crisis.

“We have 28 member states pulling in the different directions. What has been done so far has exposed the fractures within the European Union. I think that what we are seeing now is effectively the end of Schengen as it was originally conceived,” Cartwright added.

I think that the current refugee crisis in Europe is a manufactured turmoil caused by the Russian airstrikes in Syria to undermine the European Union by exposing the weaknesses of the external borders and exploiting the differences between different member states, Cartwright reiterated.
