Labeling Hezbollah terrorist, nervous reaction by Arab states: Analyst

Press TV has conducted an interview with Hazem Salem, a political activist and commentator, and Saeed Sadek, a professor at the American University of Cairo, about a recent move by the Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf declaring Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement a “terrorist group.”

Salem says labeling Hezbollah a “terrorist group” is a “nervous reaction” to the continuation of the resistance movement’s influence in Lebanese politics and to the recent developments in the Middle East.

“This comes while there is more pressure on Saudi Arabia and its allies in the region and the [Persian] Gulf countries after the Iranian elections,” he says.

He says Saudi Arabia is very much “threatened” by the successes of its rivals in the region—namely Hezbollah and Iran—and it has decided to play the sectarian game.

He says that if Saudi Arabia sees the Middle East being restructured in a way that is not favorable toward its hegemony, it will move to destabilize the region.

Sadek, for his part, believes that this move is part of the “regional game” between the Persian Gulf states and Iran and the escalation of the situation will only benefit the West, which seeks to keep the whole area very unstable.
