Violence claimed 670 Iraqi lives in February: UN
Latest figures released by the United Nations (UN) show that acts of terrorism and violence killed 670 people in Iraq in the month of February.
According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 670 Iraqis lost their lives last month while 1,290 others were injured.
The UN mission added that the number of the civilians killed stood at 410, and the number of civilians injured was 1,050. Violence claimed the lives of 260 members of the Iraqi security forces while 240 others sustained injuries.
A large number of the fatalities were recorded in the capital, Baghdad, where 277 civilians were killed and 838 others wounded.
A total of 40 people were killed and 43 others wounded in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala. In the troubled northern province of Nineveh, 42 people were killed and five injured.
Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Jan Kubis has expressed remorse about the continuing loss of life and the injuries as a result of violence in Iraq.
“This conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on the population. Civilians account for about two-thirds of the overall death toll and for most of the injuries in February. This is deeply worrying and disheartening. Civilians should not pay the price in this conflict,” he said.
According to the UN, a total of 849 people were killed and another 1,450 wounded in terror attacks across Iraq in January.
The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh terrorists began an offensive in Iraqi territory in June 2014.
