US expands cyber attacks on Daesh network: Pentagon

US Secretary Of Defense Ash Carter (L) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Joseph Dunford speak to the media in the Pentagon briefing room, on February 29, 2016 in Arlington, Virginia. (AFP)

The Pentagon says it is expanding its cyber attacks against Daesh (ISIL) citing the significant role of such warfare in campaign against the Takfiri terrorist group.

The United States aims is to "disrupt ISIL’s command and control, to cause them to lose confidence in their networks, to overload their network so that they can’t function, and do all of these things that will interrupt their ability to command and control forces there, control the population and the economy," Defense Secretary Ashton Carter told reporters on Monday.

He also said the US-led coalition has seized the momentum in the 18-month-old fight allegedly against the terrorists.

"Because of our strategy and our determination to accelerate our campaign, momentum is now on our side and not on ISIL's," Carter stated.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joe Dunford, who was also taking questions during the briefing, pointed to anti-ISIL campaign in Iraq, saying the US is trying to retake the key city of Mosul.

However, he said Iraqi officials have expressed doubt about whether the task could be accomplished this year.

"People have confused maybe when would Mosul be secure with when will operations start," Dunford said.

"Both in terms of the cyber capability, as the secretary spoke about, as well as operations to cut the line of communications and begin to go after some of the targets in and around Mosul, those operations have already started."

Daesh militants have been committing heinous crimes against all ethnic and religious communities in Iraq and Syria.

Since August 2014, Washington has been conducting airstrikes against what they call Daesh positions in Iraq.

Some members of the so-called US-led coalition have also been pounding purported ISIL positions inside Syria since September 2014, without any authorization from Damascus or the UN.

The US-led coalition has done little to stop the ISIL's advances in parts of Syria and in western Iraq.
