Bahrain court hands jail terms to four for ‘terrorism’

A court in Bahrain has sentenced four people to five years in jail on charges of allegedly planning to receiving explosives and training in order to carry out attacks in the country.

Bahrain’s public prosecutor made the announcement in a statement released by the state BNA news agency, on Thursday.

According to the statement, two of the suspects were convicted of facilitating the movement of the other two for the purpose of “carrying out terrorist crimes inside the kingdom of Bahrain.”

The Bahrain judiciary has come under fire by human rights groups for handing down long-term sentences to the opposition.

Bahrain has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since mid-February 2011.

Bahrain’s ongoing heavy-handed crackdown on peaceful demonstrations has left scores of people dead and hundreds injured.

Earlier this month, a Bahraini court sentenced eight people to prison for three years after accusing them of setting tires on fire and blocking the road during a protest in the Salmabad neighborhood of Manama in 2014.
