Iran’s Petrochimi Bandar Imam claims WABA Championship title

Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam has performed outstandingly at the 2016 West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) Championship in Jordan, landing in the first position of the tournament.

The Iranian outfit, which competes in the Iranian Basketball Super League, defeated the Lebanese club al-Riyadi 70-68 in a final match played in the Jordanian capital city of Amman on Monday.

Earlier in the day, another Iranian team, Azad University Tehran Basketball Club, breezed past Lebanon’s Champville 113-74 in a third-place game.

The other teams that came up short at the 16th edition of WABA Championship were Iraq's al-Shurta and Jordan's Orthodox Cup.

The 2016 WABA Championship started in the Jordanian capital city of Amman on February 18, and finished on February 22, 2016.

The WABA Championship is a basketball tournament national teams organized by the West Asia Basketball Association, which is a sub-zone of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Asia Championship and FIBA Asia Cup.
