Over 50 percent of fish stocks are fully exploited. And when it comes to over-exploitation, that number stands at over 30%. The fishing industry is an economic powerhouse, an industry that is worth over 2.5 trillion dollars.

With all this money involved, it is no wonder that governments and politicians have not set enforced rules that have been set by the fishing industry to stop the pillaging of the seas and oceans. Most of the fishing nations have not ratified any international conventions to protect sea or marine life.

The ocean, a mass that humans too often take for granted, plays a direct role in livelihoods across the globe. The loss of the ocean’s habitats and species would have a devastating ripple effect on global food security.

Then, add to that slave labor. A study has found that impoverished migrant workers in Thailand are sold or lured by false promises and forced to catch and process fish that ends up in global food giant Nestlé’s supply chains. There are also reports of African and Asian migrant workers being routinely but illegally used as cheap labor on European fishing trawlers.
