3 killed, 18 injured in car bomb in Russia’s Dagestan
A major car bomb claimed by Daesh Takfiri group has killed three people and injured many others in Russia’s Dagestan republic.
Investigators said on Monday that the bomb which was set off by two 122 mm shells inside a Russian-made Lada Priori went off at a police checkpoint near the city of Derbent, injuring 18 people.
Rasul Temirbekov, the spokesman for the Dagestani branch of the federal Investigative Committee, said four other vehicles were destroyed in the blast. He said two of the dead were police officers.
Russian media said that Daesh, a Takfiri militant group which is being targeted by an ongoing air campaign by Russia in Syria, claimed the attack in a tweet. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said a local terror group was apparently used for the bombing attack.
Dagestan, a Muslim-dominated region which neighbors Chechnya in Russia’s southeast, has been a major breeding ground for terrorists who travel to Syria and Iraq to join Daesh and other militants.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly defended his late September decision to dispatch warplanes to Syria as a means of blocking the return of terrorists to Russia. The air campaign, which began upon an official request by the Syrian government, has proved successful as Damascus has managed to retake key areas from militants under the air cover provided by Russia.
Russia says between 5,000 and 7,000 people from Russia and other former Soviet countries are now fighting along the ranks of Daesh.
