Chemical arms US pretext to intervene in Syria: Expert

The AFP taken on January 13, 2014 shows people being treated at a field hospital after a poison gas attack in the city of Daraya, southwest of the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Press TV has interviewed Zayd al-Isa, a Middle East expert in London, about top US intelligence officials acknowledging that Daesh terrorist group has access to the internationally-banned chemical weapons and has used them in the past.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: We look at this situation, what is exactly going on in your perspective? Now we have actually American officials acknowledging that Daesh has used chemical weapons and up until this time, basically they have been pointing the finger at the Syrian government saying it was President Assad’s government that had used these chemical weapons. What is going on? Why the change?

Isa: Of course they wanted to use it as the perfect pretext to actually intervene in Syria. They were heavily backed up by the Saudis who knew full well that the chemical weapons were actually developed, manufactured by the same terrorist groups that operated both in Iraq and Syria, that is ISIS (Daesh) and also Jabhat al-Nusra.

They are extremist Takfiri groups that are heavily financed, armed, provided logistical support and paid salaries by the Saudis who wanted to use that as an excuse, that the Syrian government has actually used those weapons to actually give the Americans the perfect pretext that the red line which has been designated by Obama that if chemical weapons are deployed by the Syrian government, then the US would intervene. That was back in 2013.

However, the trick actually did not work because it was never proven and they did not have credible evidence to actually pin the blame on the Syrian government and the West actually knew fully, it was acutely aware that this technology was actually been able to be developed by ISIS because ISIS actually has been made up by the elite Republican Guard, the security forces of Saddam Hussein which was backed up then, the entire regime of Saddam Hussein was backed up again by the Saudis who financed the regime, provided it with logistical support and provided it more importantly with the political backup, political support where Saudi Arabia and its former foreign minister Saud al-Faisal have acted as the main force behind the Saddam regime, giving it the excuse to use those chemical weapons and even backed up the use of those chemical weapons against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

But the reason that the Americans have highlighted this fact now because they can see that ISIL and Jabhat al-Nusra is on the back foot. It is reeling in both Iraq and Syria. That is because of the highly effective Russian backup with the unwavering, unflinching support from the Islamic Republic who actually managed to turn the tide and take the fight to the ISIL group and Jabhat al-Nusra in both Syria and Iraq and they have actually managed to turn the table against them.

We have seen the triumphs by the Syrian army and also by the Iraqi security forces in both Ramadi and also in Aleppo and … that has horrified and scared both Americans and the Saudis. The Americans need ISIS to be a credible, viable threat in order for it to prop up and shore up its waning influence in Iraq and also to highlight that its forces are actually needed and we have seen the special forces of the Americans actually converge on Iraq. That is with the full backing, I have to say, of the Iraqi government who said that it does not need American boots on the ground while in reality we have seen those forces converge on Iraq …
