Daesh gearing up for chemical attack on US: Clapper

The Daesh (ISIL) group is seeking to use chemical weapons it has procured against the United States, says the director of US National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Speaking at an annual global security conference in Munich on Friday, James Clapper said that the Takfiri terror organization is in possession of chemical weapons and is believed to have used them numerous times in Iraq and Syria.

“It is pretty clear that they [Daesh] have used this [chemical weapons] numerous times, it is very clear aspirationally they would like to do more and it is a concern to us in the United States because the indications are that they would like to use chemical weapons against us,” Clapper said.

“Potentially it is a game changer, there are all kinds of scary scenarios you are able to conjure up if, in fact, Daesh is able to enhance its competence with chemical weapons,” he added.

Last year, civilians in Ghouta, near the Syrian capital of Damascus, had fallen victim to an ISIL chemical attack involving mustard gas.

Moreover, the terror group has reportedly taken over Iraqi chemical weapons factories, with the US military officials confirming its use of a “mustard agent” against Kurdish Peshmerga fighters on August 11 in the city of Makhmur, southwest of Erbil.

The image grab shows a crude roadside bomb filled with toxic chlorine gas being detonated by bomb disposal teams in Iraq.

Clapper’s statements echoed the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director John Brennan, who said Thursday that Daesh has used chemical weapons and is capable of making small quantities of chlorine and mustard gas.

The CIA chief also warned that the terrorist group might seek to export the weapons to the West for financial gain.

In September, the Pentagon ordered its nearly 3,500 troops stationed in Iraq to prepare their chemical attack gears as a “precautionary measure.”

According to Eren Erdem, a Turkish lawmaker of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Daesh terrorists have obtained the materials required to produce deadly sarin gas through Turkey.
